What competitor research should actually tell you

A category report you could have written yourself is not research. The useful version names the rivals you have, the campaigns they are running now, and the gap they left open.

A magnifying glass singling out one figure from a row of anonymous ones, beside a panel of charts and a chess knight.

Most competitor research answers a question nobody asked. It describes a market in the abstract, lists the five brands everyone already knows, and leaves you exactly where you started — because none of it tells you what to do differently on Tuesday.

The version worth having is specific and current. Who is bidding against you right now, what they charge, which angle their ads lead with, and — the part that actually shapes a campaign — what none of them are saying. That last one is where a new campaign has room to land.

markXpand runs this live rather than from a stored report, and returns it as a ranked list you can read in a minute: competitor, positioning, pricing, the ad angles in play. It feeds straight into the brief, so the copy generated later is written against a real market rather than a generic one.
